FULL NAME: Pax Orion Sweetapple
NICKNAMES: Nothing that's ever been used consistently. She'll respond to just about anything, though.
AGE/DOB: 16 | November 28th (Sagittarius)
YEAR: Junior
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female | she/her/hers
SEXUALITY: Unsure, mostly because she hasn't really had any romantic feelings as of yet. Any crushes she's had have been fleeting and closer to a need for attention than a true crush.
HOMETOWN: Haystack, CA, a small wizarding town right next to Petaluma. Though technically a Muggle town too, only a few buildings actually bear the Haystack city in their addresses so it's primarily a nice little magic neighborhood that's got lots of little areas generally not accessible to Muggles.
APPEARANCE:Pax can typically be found in simple make-up, comfy clothes, and with generally untamed hair unless she's playing Quidditch (have
you ever tried hitting a Bludger when you're pulling your hair out of your mouth?). Her entire vibe is ~*comfortable*~ because outside of being true to herself, that's her biggest goal in life. She's got a love of grunge style and will often be wearing something plaid or a a band shirt or something a little torn, but as long as she doesn't feel stifled she'll be content. It's rare to catch her in a dress or skirt unless it's something that's baggy or t-shirt-y, and she claims to be allergic to formal clothes every time a dance or other event pops up. PLEASE don't make her wear heels, she'll die and that'll definitely be on you. Accessory-wise, she's a little hit or miss - if she's remember to put on jewelry, she's wearing multiples of everything, and her nails are often painted elaborately, but are generally chipped. If there's not some form of headphones on her body at all times, please assume she has been body-snatched.
HEIGHT: 5'5"
BUILD: Leanly muscular.
PB: Odessa Adlon
INSPO: Pinterest There are a few guiding forces in Pax's life, the most important of which is being true to herself. Growing up in a household that embraced creativity, curiosity, and individualism, there was never a point in the young witch's life where she really questioned if the person she was at the moment was right or wrong, because there's no right and wrong when it comes to people, really. (Except if you're like, a sociopathic murderer? But she's not, so she's doing great.) Self-fulfillment goes hand-in-hand with being yourself, so of course Pax has also readily embraced that her whole life, too. Pax does what she wants (within reason), and she's not sorry about it. She's also unapologetic about herself in general, her interests, and her needs and wants. Self-doubt is a four letter word. While she does realize that not everyone was lucky enough to have parents like hers, she presses hard for those around her to love themselves and, at worst, work on fixing things they don't like about themselves (that are fixable) instead of just feeling bad about them. She wants everyone to live their truth or whatever, except she'd never say that because she's not that much of a hippie, thank you.
Despite being filled with this very new age self-love and do-whatever-you-want-ness, Pax also believes in good old fashioned responsibility. That means not only owning up to your mistakes, but taking responsibility for going for the things you want and for improving yourself. Of course, that doesn't mean you shouldn't make mistakes, or shouldn't do some dumb shit in the name of making yourself happy, but if you get picked up by the cops for something you most definitely did, well, them's the breaks. Take your punishment and move on to the next adventure. As for herself, given that Pax isn't perfect, it's not like she'll always take her just deserts with a smiling face. She just tries really hard to. In her defense, it's difficult to accept that you deserve to be grounded for hanging upside down from your broom while trying to hit a baseball with a bat. It wasn't
that dangerous!
So, self-love, self-care, self-fulfillment champion Pax believes in fixing the things you don't like, and taking responsibility for all the things you mess up along the way. This can sometimes lead her to be a little less sympathetic to others than she'd like to be, but she's working on it. And not feeling bad for others doesn't mean that she won't give it her all to help them out. Pax is the friend that's ready with a hug, or a slug (the punch, not the bug, but maybe the bug if you want), some sincere encouragement, or some advice that you may or may not want. She'll help you bury a body or clean up a mess, and while she might laugh a little at you while she does it, it's all out of love. You
do need to ask her for the help, though; she's not one to push her way into other people's problems unless it's do or die. She's pretty easy to befriend, and her generosity is pretty impressive when pressed.
Pax is someone who doesn't just like things - she
loves them. There's often enthusiasm radiating from her about almost everything, because at this point in her life, why wouldn't almost everything be exciting? Even the mundane tasks that make up life can be spiced up to make them more entertaining. This enthusiasm can spill into a lot of fidgeting though, and she often needs to get her energy out somehow or she'll become annoyingly restless. Having activities like Quidditch have helped her be a lot more attentive in class, at least, and she can focus on the tasks at hand when she needs to now, unlike her younger self. She's always playful and mischievous, but she can get a little daredevilly, especially on her broom, when she's been still for too long. The name of the game is clearly fun, and while she
technically knows that fun needs to be balanced with work, and it should really be work now, reward later... well, you know, people slip up sometimes! It's all fine and good. Her drive for fun leaves her infinitely curious about things, and means she's very open to new experiences, especially if they maybe sound a tad dangerous. She'll encourage others to try new things too, even if those new things are just a little bit questionable.
With all of this, it's not surprising that Pax isn't one to take anything too seriously, up to and including sports. Sure, she wants to win because winning is fun, but most of the fun is in playing so she's not aggressively competitive with much of anything. Doesn't mean she won't try her hardest, but you won't catch her upset about a loss. While she can recognize when something truly requires gravity and can act accordingly... please don't make her? Unless she really super has to? There are very few things that actually upset Pax because of this, and when she is emotionally affected, she bounces back quickly.
FUN FACTS:
Likes: Being outside, bugs, most music, dancing around to music, listening to music constantly, fun nail art, comfy clothes, wildflowers, watching movies (the weirder the better), baseball, Qudopot, Qudditch, broom flying and tricks, goblins, fruit.
Dislikes: Formal clothes, people doubting themselves, super serious things, people complaining too much about the consequences of their own actions, having really bad consequences for her own actions, aggressive competitiveness, having to sit still for too long, vegetables.
Is a lefty and likes to remind everyone that she has to buy special scissors and it's very rude of the universe to do that to her.
Has a very old iPod that contains her treasure trove of music. She's always fighting for a plug to charge it.
LANGUAGES: English. Can yell more than a few curse words in Gobbledegook and hold a very remedial conversation.
HOBBIES: Looking at bugs, touching bugs, saving bugs from other students, pressing wildflowers, making simple flower crowns, listening to music, watching weird movies, painting her nails and doing nail art, broomin', Quidditch, baseball, recreational Quodpot, having opinions about Quodpot.
SKILLS:
SPORTS: Pax has played baseball, Quodpot, and Quidditch competitively at various points in her life, and enjoys all three. She has no interest in joining the school Quodpot team because she wants to dedicate herself fully to Quidditch, but she's happy to give really great pointers about how they could play better that they certainly all appreciate. She's surprisingly non-competitive with sports, but does always do her best.
FLYING: Having had the opportunity to play with a broom at a young age, and after playing Quodpot and Qudditch, Pax is pretty handy when it comes to flying. Her desire for fun has lead her to be maybe a little too adventurous on her broom in the past, so now she can do quite a few tricks without falling to her death.
BUGS: A lover of all bug and bug-like things, Pax is good at identifying creepy crawlies, knowing about how dangerous they are, and will handle just about anything. If you've got a spider in your room just call her, she'll come gently usher it outside for you.
WILDFLOWERS: Like bugs, Pax loves wildflowers and is good at identifying them and knowing if they're harmful or helpful. She's fine with generally human-reared plants, but where she really shines is just with crap that grows all natural-like.
NAIL ART: She may not be an artist, but she can hold a tiny brush and do a surprisingly good job on her own nails, as well as others'. Pax has gotten so good because she has to repaint her nails like every other day. What a mess.
FAMILY:Billie Jean Sweetapple | Mother | Goblin Liaison at a Bank
Billie Jean is fluent in Gobbledegook and like 90% of her friends are goblins. She was a college-level Quodpot player that almost went pro, but walked away from a game with an arm injury that made it too hard to play anymore. She comes from a very wealthy family that owns magical orchards all across the US. While she's a very relaxed parent that encourages her kids to live their lives and be themselves, she's not very relaxed when it comes to other parents. Her kids can beat up your kids. They never would though, of course; they're too great.
Tucker Sweetapple | Father | Painter
Tucker specializes in magical portraits that are a little too Picasso-esque and freeform for the general wizard, but are all the rage for the up and coming. He took his wife's name to distance himself from a rather severe and borderline purist family that hated that he wanted to be a painter instead of working in a bank like the rest of his family. He's even more laissez faire than his wife about child-rearing. He's fiercely intelligent and can debate art theory with you for decades.
Billie Jean Sweetapple Jr. | Brother | 25 | Painter
Billie Jean Jr. is an artist like his father, but creates all abstract and tempestuous paintings. He prefers to sell to non-human clientele because they 'get him' more. He's married to a Veela named Claire, and Pax has a pool with her sister Millie Dean about when they'll get divorced. A very loving young man, but eccentric. While he's not dumb, he's too far up his own ass for a lot of conversations.
Millie Dean Sweetapple | Sister | 22 | Photographer
Millie Dean shoots mostly boudoir photos for the wizarding rich and famous, and is dating a tattoo-covered model because of course she is. She's terrifyingly beautiful, and maybe more than a little mean, but in like, the loving way? Anti-establishment.
Max Sweetapple | Sister | 19 | Linguistics Student
Max wants to follow in her mother's footsteps in a sense, but she's learning more non-human languages and wants to not be stuck in a bank. She's fascinated by Muggles. She plays too much D&D. She has gone to more than five monster truck rallies.
Philomena Sweetapple (Granny Sweetapple) | Maternal Grandmother | Orchard Mogul
Pax loves her but she 1) never shuts up and 2) never stops sending her various fruits from her very large set of orchards and it's getting to be a lot.
Buck Hayes Sweetapple (Grampy Sweetapple) | Maternal Grandfather | Deceased
Pax was best friends with her grandfather, and got his wand on his passing. He worked hard but loved to prank people, even into old age. He also bought Pax her first broom when she was not old enough for one.
Gertrude McGilliguddy | Cousin | Senior at Peckenpaugh
Pax thinks she's maybe an alien?? How are they related?? There's love there, of course, but Pax is pretty sure she doesn't understand her fundamentally. And that's a-ok.
BACKGROUND:Nothing has been
super interesting in Pax's life, but, honestly, nothing has been super uninteresting, as far as she's concerned. Born at some god awful hour in the morning after way too long of a labor, Pax's mom swore she was done having babies, and has since kept to that. Though the youngest of four, she was never really treated as such. She was allowed to do most things her siblings did as long as she was physically capable, wasn't fussed after extra, and just generally did whatever she wanted within reason thanks to two parents with very relaxed parenting styles. She attended a Muggle public school in Petaluma for her elementary years, and when she wasn't at home she was likely to be found at her grandparents' orchard, trying to play pranks with her grandfather and flying on a broom much younger than she probably should have been.
Filled with energy and precocious from hanging out with adults and her older siblings all the time, Pax often struggled to maintain focus in classes or with homework. In a brilliant move by her father, it was suggested that they sign her up for sports - it couldn't hurt to try, right? And thus, little Pax was enrolled in tee-ball (graduating to baseball), and eventually Quodpot, and her schooling improved and she became significantly less annoying at home (when she didn't have a bat or a broom in her hand). Her parents encouraged her to explore all sorts of hobbies and while she poked around at everything from scouting to painting, nothing held her attention quite like sports.
When Pax was nine her grandfather passed away, and while it of course stung things continued along. Chores continued (responsibility is important), school continued (because of course), sports continued (so the schooling could actually continue). It took Pax the longest out of her family members to recover, but the fact that her grandfather's wand rejected her three siblings and seemed suited to her (even though she was too young to have a wand) helped her along some. She spent more time at her grandparents' orchard to keep her grandmother company, and learned all sorts of things about bugs and wildflowers through trial and error and any books she could dig up.
For middle school Pax attended a small but prestigious magical day school for grades 6-12 called Twin Peaks Academy in San Francisco, near her mother's work, and played Quodpot on the school's team. Things were going just fine, and she was doing well in school, but Pax wanted more
adventure. Her parents thought this was a great idea, and they sat down together to review high schools that would get her out into the big wide world. Peckenpaugh seemed like fun. And thus, Pax descended on West Virginia. She picked up learning Quidditch her freshman year, got a place on the team her sophomore year, and has managed to not die or fail any class yet.
WAND: Applewood, 10.75", Billywig stinger core. This was actually her maternal grandfather's wand, and it rejected all three of her siblings before landing in her grubby little hands. It's made from wood from the family orchard, and is fairly simplistic in design but is a beautiful color and is taken care of very well.
FAMILIAR: A giant stag beetle named (King) Arthur. Much like her father and her brother, Arthur is an
artist. Have you ever seen a person kiss a stag beetle? Because you're about to. He's a little larger than a standard giant stag beetle should really be.
CAREER GOALS: The future is one big question mark for Pax, but she's ok with that. She knows the things she likes (Quidditch, goblins, nature), and she figures she can find something that involves at least one of those things for a job. Maybe she'll just use her animagus form to do tricks on a broom for money. Or maybe'best friend to bugs and goblins' is an occupation.
CLASSES: Pax is fine at school, but often gets restless in class if it's no one of her favorites. To help combat that, she's engaging and likes to be involved in class discussions, and will often raise her hand to answer questions, even if she only thinks she knows the answer. She averages out to a B-student overall.
CHARMS - A necessity, and she doesn't have anything that would let her skip out on this anyway. At least it's useful! Solid B student.
POTIONS - Another necessity, and no reason to not take it. Kind of wants to blow up things. Mostly will try not to. Solid B student.
TRANSFIGURATION (H) - Turn some shit into some other shit? What self-respecting teenager
wouldn't want to be in this class?? (Also she desperately wants to turn into what she assumes will be a really gnarly bug, so she figures she'd better work hard here.) Mid-to-Low A's.
HERBOLOGY (H) - While she's not necessarily great at raising plants, nor is she particularly excited about plant uses, Pax loves nature and flowers and outside stuffs, so it seemed like a logical course choice. Low A's, but if grades require husbandry she suffers a little.
OUTDOOR MAGIC - This class pretty much has everything Pax could ever want in a class. She shows off on her broom during class, so if that doesn't ding her grade, she gets A's.
CRYPTOZOOLOGY & MAGIZOOLOGY - Want to know what's fun? Weird creepy crawlies!! Also just like non-crawly creatures too. The homework SUCKS, but at least the content is interesting. B's.
NON-HUMAN LANGUAGES - She wants to be able to talk to all of her mom's friends/REALLY curse in Gobbledegook. She's very dedicated to this class, even if she's goofy about it sometimes. Pax secretly desperately wants to befriend every goblin alive. A's.
ANIMAGUS STUDIES (African Wild Dog) - Pax can't imagine anything cooler than becoming something else, so she made a scramble for the Animagus Studies class. She's hoping she turns into some sort of demon bug, but she will not. A focused and excited student who is genuinely doing her best. B's-A's, probably.
EXTRA-CURRICULARS: QUIDDITCH (Beater) - Despite growing up playing Qudopot, Pax took to Quidditch quickly because someone would hand her a bat and put her on a broom at the same time. This is her second year on the team.
ADVENTURE CLUB - Someone needs a place to burn off some energy even after Quidditch practice, and what better place than the great outdoors, Pax's second home? Please let her roll down some hills.
FILM CLUB - Not a film connoisseur by any means, Pax does like a lazy night to curl up and watch something. She has a lot of stupid, probably wrong opinions about movies.
SORTING?: Pax considered simply lying down and going to sleep in the Spring Room - how beautiful! How perfect! While, honestly, everything sounded like a good time to her (because everything always sounds like a good time), Mothgarden was the house that made her heart feel the warmest. Also, moths? Yes please.
